Kim Coles headlines the 5th Annual Women’s Empowerment Conference
The 5th Annual Women’s Empowerment Conference will be held on Saturday, May 19th at the Reliant Center, and will feature keynote speaker and former cast member of “In Living Color”, “Living Single”, and co-host host of new OWN Network show, “Are You Normal, America?” actress Kim Coles.
This conference will embody the true essence of empowerment with inspiring leadership, achievement, and accountability among diverse women of Houston. This year’s conference theme for AWEC is “Celebrating You!” Sponsors and strategic partners include: the YWCA Houston, Houston chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Kroger, and investment firm Edward Jones.
RB: How does it feel to be chosen as the official speaker for the 5th Annual Women’s Empowerment Conference?
KC: First of all I am very appreciative that I have been asked to speak at the annual conference. I am delighted to be afforded this opportunity to empower women! I realize that my special gift is love and laughter, and I am ready to become a beacon for others through motivational speaking.
RB: Your experience in tv/film is so diverse; do you feel that the industry has come full circle by accepting more diverse talent, themes, and engaging more people of color behind the scenes?
KC: The tv/film industry has not come full circle with incorporating more diverse talent in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Presently, an all black cast on a major network is non-existent. I firmly believe that we need more people of color as decision makers(behind the scenes); therefore their voice will become the determining factor for incorporating more diversity in tv/film.
As an actress, I am not deterred by statistics. I pay attention, and focus on giving good quality work.
RB: I have been hearing rumors of a new In Living Color this year, will you be participating in any episodes?
KC: I’m sorry I won’t be a part of the cast of In Living Color, but do wish them well.
RB: Tell us about your new show on the OWN Network. Have you met Oprah?
KC: I am so excited about this new venture!! I will be co-hosting a weekly game show on the OWN Network called: Are you Normal, America? This show will conduct polls from viewers to determine how normal (or not) the contestants are. Each week contestants have the opportunity to win $100,000.00 in cash and prizes.
Meeting Oprah was surreal. Her energy and benevolence resonates to all in her presence.

RB: What’s next for Kim Coles?
KC: I am currently a recurring guest on Cedric the Entertainer’s new show Soulman. (on TV Land), and writing my own one woman show called “Oh But Wait, There’s More”. This year I also look forward to traveling the country with my own comedy tour, and motivating women with more speaking engagements.
